Welcome to the St Edward’s Royal Free Website. As well as some key documents, our fortnightly newsletters and our calendar of events, we hope you will get a feel for our ethos and values and the importance we attach to our school as part of the local community. I hope too that you will appreciate the wide range of opportunities on offer and gain a sense of the enjoyment and engagement of our pupils.
We are proud of our school history and its unique status as an Ecumenical Middle School. The school was created through the merger of St Edward’s Catholic Middle School and The Royal Free Church of England School in 1986. We are supported by the Dioceses of Portsmouth and Oxford and in 2005 celebrated 300 years of the Royal Free Trust where it all began at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Our school is a four-form entry co-educational Middle School for pupils aged 9-13 serving the community of Windsor. Our site is light and attractive and we have purpose-built specialist teaching spaces for a range of different curriculum subjects. Our music suite, computing area and performance space, our Sports Hall and science laboratories are modern and well-equipped. Our pupils wear their uniform with pride and we insist pupils look smart and develop good learning habits in class.
Currently we are operating a model of Co-Headship with Mr Welsh (after 15 years as Head himself) and Mr Miles (Deputy since 2010) sharing the responsibility of leading the school. Both our Head Teachers have completed the National Professional Qualification for Headteachers (NPQH) and are of course used to working together over many years.
This is a warm, happy and exciting place to be. In June 2017, Ofsted inspected the school and confirmed that we continue to be a “Good” school. We help our young people to grow spiritually and become confident learners. They leave us at the end of Year 8, well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
We do, of course, welcome visitors and encourage you to come and see us for yourself. We look forward to meeting you.
